Flea & Tick Prevention At our Winter Garden Office

Summer weather is here, and for millions of pet owners, that means problems with fleas and ticks. While most pets only have to deal with itching and scratching, some suffer from far worse health problems related to these pet parasites. At Winter Garden Animal Hospital we make parasite prevention an important part of every pet's annual wellness examination. Preventing health problems is always a better choice than treating them after the fact, and it's important to us that our pet patients enjoy their summer free of itching and health problems.

Health Problems From Fleas and Ticks

Everyone is familiar with dogs and cats scratching away behind their ears, trying to relieve the itch that parasites can cause. While this skin condition can make your pet miserable, flea and tick prevention is important for more than just itch relief. Pet parasites can cause a wide range of health problems in both dogs and cats, including:

  • Allergic reactions to flea saliva. Some pets, especially dogs, can develop severe allergies to the saliva left when fleas bite
  • Lyme disease, caused by ticks
  • Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, caused by the bite of a tick
  • Loss of fur, infections and bloody spots from severe bouts of scratching

Ways to Prevent Pet Parasites

In our office, we offer multiple forms of tick and flea treatment, for both dogs and cats. Keeping your home and pets free of dangerous parasites is always best, instead of having to treat the problem after it happens. The most popular with almost every pet owner is the spot-on treatments. These liquid drops are easy to apply, relatively inexpensive, and they work very well against both fleas and ticks.

Sprays will kill ticks and fleas on contact, making them an effective fighter if your pet has already been infested. While they can be very effective, they can also cause side effects in some pets and even their owners, so you should use care when spraying. Some sprays are used as an addition to the spot-on medications or dipping in our office

Oral medications are very effective because they treat your pet's entire body, with no chance of missing some spots. Some medications are meant for tick prevention, while others work on fleas.
