October is Adopt A Dog Month!

The Winter Garden Animal Hospital in Winter Garden, Florida, supports Adopt A Shelter Dog Month in October. According to the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), an estimated 3 to 4  million dogs enter shelters nationwide each year. That's why in 1981 it established Adopt A Dog Month, to bring attention to the plight of shelter dogs and to encourage adoption. Abandoned, injured, ill, or abused, they all need a forever home. You could be a hero to one!

Adopt, Don't Shop!

The ASPCA wants you to Find Your Fido.

It's really a win-win-win situation. Here's how:

For you:

  • By adopting a shelter dog, you'd save quite a lot of money as shopping for a dog can be very expensive.
  • You can learn about the dog and its habits. The shelter employees and volunteers can describe the dog's personality, whether it's good with kids, likes to take walks, and so on. You will find dogs of every type, size, and age.
  • Shelter dogs seem grateful and show lots of love. Their devotion to you can be life-changing.

For the shelter:

  • After you adopt a dog, the shelter has room for one more dog.
  • The shelter now has you and your well-behaved pet as advocates of shelter adoption.

For the dog:

The dog has a second chance, a new life where he is loved, properly cared for, respected, protected. He can be your walking buddy, your trained pet assistant, or just a happy, smiling face greeting you at the end of the day.

What If You Can't Adopt?

There are many ways other than adopting that you can be a hero. Support your local shelter or rescue group. They all need volunteers to feed, walk, clean the pets and their cages. They need donations of money or supplies. If you need help connecting with a shelter or rescue group, call your neighborhood veterinarian.

A Feel-Good Experience

Maybe it's because it's such a win-win-win situation, but those who adopt from a shelter or rescue group report that it is a fulfilling experience. Start there when you are ready to adopt a dog.
